In this pre-release, there is only OpenType/CFF2 variable font deployment configuration. More configurations will be available in later releases.

Configuration: OpenType/CFF2 Variable Font

OpenType/CFF2 variable font (theoretically) works with Windows 10 1803+, macOS 10.15+, Linux with FreeType 2.8+. However, latest OS releases are always recommended because early releases may have critical bugs like source-han-sans#290 with this format.

• OTC: pack 5 language-specific OTFs to a single OTC file, recommended for latest OS.
• OTF: language-specific OTFs for developers and Windows 10 1809 users.
• Subset OTF (CN/TW/HK/JP/KR): region-specific subset OTFs, following Source Han Sans notations.

Known Issue

1. Not work in some win32 apps.
   • Including Windows Font Viewer. Don’t worry, install and inspect in Setting app.
2. Named instances have extremely long names (like “Resource Han Rounded CN VF ExtraLight SlightlyRounded”) which exceed 31-character limit in some legacy software.
   • Including MS Office. There will be TTF with name fix in later releases.
3. Low performance in Adobe Photoshop 2021.
   • 2022 is much better.
4. The font file is extremely large (> 100 MiB) and provides 33 named instances each OTF. If a 32-bit app tries to load all font faces, it may crash for OOM.

TTF: Each variant (J, K, SC, TC, HC) contains all glyphs, recommended.

TTC: Pack 5 variants to a single ttc file.

CN: contains almost all glyphs except Hangul.

TW / HK: supports Chinese characters (漢字) defined in Big5 character set.

JP: supports kanji (漢字) defined in JIS character set.

KR: supports all Hangul (한글), and Hanja (한자) defined in KS character set.
